[cma-l] Digital Britain Report: Community Radio

Hi all

It's that first line that worries me - 'a new tier of ultra local radio'.

It could mean loads more FM frequencies for community radio as the 'big
boys' migrate to their digital wonderland - or it could mean a nasty mash up
leaving a commercialised community radio sector with little room for
volunteers and authentic voices on air.

All the more important to have our voice heard...

We must also stake our claim to being a uniquely powerful part of the
'talent pipeline' [sorry, been writing too many funding bids recently] that
Lord Carter wants to see feeding the creative industries...

'We live in interesting times'

bests,

Phil

> Page 101 of the Digital Britain Report says the following:
>
> "While we are working towards a new tier of ultra-local radio we
> believe the rules which keep the commercial and community radio
> distinct from each other remain generally appropriate. However if the
> community radio sector is to grow and prepare itself for a more
> fundamental role in the future of radio landscape it must also be
> given the certainty to invest in its future.
>
> Alongside this report we have published a short consultation seeking
> views on proposals for a new licence renewal regime for community
> radio. In addition we are proposing the removal of the 50% funding
> limit from any one source and the restriction preventing a station
> being licenced in an area overlapping with a small commercial
> service."
>
> More from the CMA in due course.
