Dear All,

Please find below the agenda for the North West Radio Academy
“Celebrating Community Radio” event this Thursday evening at BBC Manchester

The panel:

Chair: Mike Shaft (MD Sunset 102, BBC NW’s Community Radio Manager)

Richard Lace (Project Manager, Preston FM,)

Darren Jenkinson (CMA Vice Chair, Preston FM Volunteer Co-ordinator)

Toby Whitehouse (MD, Gaydio – going on air soon)

Jaqui Devereux (CMA Director)

Steve Suttie (Station Manager, Salford City Radio)

*1: Community Radio in 1989* – the Sunset legacy (Introduced by Mike Shaft)

Local radio in 1989 looked very different in the NW. Piccadilly, Red
Rose and Radio City were the ILRs and there was BBC GMR, Lancashire and
Merseyside who were providing our local radio. But then, before
“thinking outside the box” became a phrase, Sunset Radio launched a
whole new kind of radio service that aimed at several small audiences,
instead of just one big one. Community Radio in the North West was born.

*2: Community Radio in 2009* – How has the NW landscape changed in the
past 20 years? (Introduced by Jaqui Devereux)

A lot has happened since 1989, indeed a lot has happened since the
community radio order was passed by Parliament 5 years ago. Jaqui tells
us about the remarkable achievements that have been made in the region.

*3: The OFCOM pilots *– WFM and ALL FM (introduced by Darren Jenkinson)

Community Radio was piloted throughout the UK with 16 stations getting a
two year license. Their success in those 2 years of guinea piggy
community radio was the turning point. But what was it like at the pilot
stations? Did it feel as though the whole sector depended upon the
success of these fledgling projects? Darren was at WFM and he remembers
it well!

*4: Community Radio Changes Lives* – it really does! (introduced by
Steve Suttie)

For a janitor who had just finished mopping the community centre floor
when he learnt that he’d got a job in Community Radio, Steve knows how
much the sector really changes peoples lives - its not just for words
for funding bids. Community radio is a huge part of thousands of peoples
lives in the North West every week, and it has improved many volunteers
lives along the way.

*5: Funding the sector *– How does it pay for itself?* *What are the
problems? (Introduced by Richard Lace)

Despite the explosion of community radio, the 200 stations licensed and
the endless queue of wannabe volunteers – there’s still not an adequate
pot of cash to pay for it. So how is it surviving, and thriving? Richard
has got millions in funding, he’ll know!

*6: Specific Communities* – Serving a minority group with community
radio (Toby Whitehouse)

Gaydio are getting ready to launch their full time service aimed at the
LGBT community of Greater Manchester, and after several hugely
successful RSL periods, Toby tells us how Gaydio, and community radio in
general can become a tool of great power and usefulness within specific
communities.

* *

*7: The Future for Community Radio?* What next as licensed stations
reach the 200 mark!? (Jaqui Devereux)

With constant talk of DAB radio, internet radio and future technologies,
what does the future really hold for our community radio sector?

*8: Local, Local Radio Debate *- Has community radio become the natural
successor to ILR? Or are their just too many radio stations out there?
Is there too much radio and not enough listeners? Can Government
licensed stations really compete with the unlicensed internet stations?
Mike Shaft introduces tonight’s closing debate.

* *

*9: Q’s* All panellists (optional?)

*CLOSE @ 8pm*
