MEDIA RELEASE FROM WIRRAL COUNCIL

February 09, 2009

Tidy Business Gold Awards

Wirral Council has awarded three Community based groups with Tidy
Business Gold Standard Awards; the first to be awarded in Wirral.

At a presentation on Thursday Evening (5th February), Wirral's Mayor
Councillor Adrian Jones presented Live Wirral Wardens, 7 Waves
Community Radio & BeanBag CES Ltd with Tidy Business Gold Standard
Awards.

In order to gain the coveted Gold Award organisations have to
demonstrate that they are going the extra mile while carrying out work
that will benefit the community.

Wirral's Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Gill Gardiner said,

"I am delighted we are able to present our first Gold Awards and that
many businesses have already signed up to this positive scheme. The
awards provide an opportunity to work together with all sectors of the
business community to improve the appearance of the local area. This
includes taking ownership of their shop frontages to help keep them
free of litter and graffiti. It is vital that we build working
relations with our business community as well as the community and
schools in order to make our town centres cleaner, safer and greener.
I hope that many more businesses will join the scheme."

The Tidy Business Award scheme is a national campaign led by ENCAMS
(formally Tidy Britain). The scheme encourages businesses to implement
initiatives for waste minimisation, reuse and recycling schemes, and
practical efforts to improve the local environment. This includes
ensuring they store and dispose of their waste responsibly.

The campaign, which was launched in Wirral in August 2008, works with
businesses to help them to improve their waste management practices
and meet their statutory obligations. A Trade Waste Officer is
visiting all shops and commercial premises in Wirral to identify
companies that are complying with their legal obligations and look for
those businesses that are recycling, and working within the local
community to promote environment initiatives.

Businesses are then graded in bronze, silver and gold levels and
presented with the award to highlight the achievements; 25 awards have
been presented to local businesses to date. For those businesses not
meeting the grade, the Trade Waste Officer will work with them, free
of charge, to improve their waste management practices and meet their
statutory obligations.

Officers will continue to work closely with all the businesses that
choose to engage in this voluntary scheme, helping them to reach the
highest award level possible. By working together, the Council and
businesses can ensure that the local environment is clean, pleasant
and safe for residents.

Businesses that would like to get involved in the scheme should
contact Daniel Molyneux, Trade Waste Officer, at Streetscene, 0151 606
2004.
