Change FM is back on the airwaves! Young people in Ham and Richmond
will again be able to tune into community radio station, Change FM.
From the 4th – 31st August, youngsters from the Ham Estate and
surrounding areas will be broadcasting daily programmes looking at
local issues, sport and music as part of a month long broadcast.

The station is part of wider holiday participation scheme, Richmond
Summer University (RSU) and aims to engage local youngsters and
community groups in radio, music and broadcast training.

Change FM will broadcast every day for four weeks, providing young
people with an opportunity to explore issues such as local history,
housing, community development, employment, training and education.

The youth run radio station is now in its third year of broadcast and
getting stronger. Over 70 young people have been involved in training
and broadcast over the lat two years and nearly 30 young people are
currently training to become DJ/Presenters this year. All successful
trainees will be awarded an Open College Network (OCN) Level 2
certificate in Radio Broadcast.

Cllr Malcolm Eady, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Children's
Services and Education, said:

'This is a very exciting project. Youngsters from the Ham Estate
traditionally have less social opportunities than many other young
people in the borough. During this project, youth workers will teach
the 'wanna-be' broadcasters about journalism, broadcasting
regulations, production and editing skills.'

'This project will help these young people channel their energies in a
constructive and positive activity that is also thoroughly enjoyable.
We want all the young people, who might not be spending their time
productively, to learn valuable skills that will help them realise
their full potential.'

Dele Ryder, Manager for Connexions, South London said:

'It's a great opportunity for the borough. 'Change FM stands for a
change for young people in Ham. This is one of many exciting projects
designed to engage young people and enable them to have a voice on the
issues that affect them.'
