Today has seen the arrival of a brand new radio service across the City of
Salford. Broadcasting 24 hours a day on 94.4FM, Salford City Radio will
be on
the air for the next five years. The radio station is part of the new third
tier of local radio, known as community or access radio.

Chairman of Salford City Radio, Jim King explains, "Community radio is very
different from mainstream local radio in that it is designed
specifically to
broadcast news, views and event notices to a much smaller geographical
area,
on a not for profit basis. Also, all of the presenters that you hear on the
air are genuine community members, volunteering their time to make
programmes.
The great thing is that it makes everything very local, and most
importantly
relevant to the community that it serves."

The project is almost seven years in the making and has been supported by
hundreds of Salfordian's, young and old along the way. The organisation has
worked extremely hard to convince the Government to award Salford its
very own
station having campaigned hard for the full time radio license by
undertaking
trial broadcasts from locations all over the City.

The station launched at 1pm and promises a wide ranging mix of programmes
throughout the schedule. Station Manager Steve Suttie said, "Salford
City Radio
will have a programme of interest to everybody in the City at one time or
other. And, if that is not the case then the great thing is that all people
have to do us give us a call and they can come and train to do their own
show!"
Salford City Radio's studio is based in Swinton. To contact the station
