Brussels 17 December 2007

Since 2000, the international community has designated 18th of December as
International Migrants Day, to celebrate the achievements and highlight the
struggles of migrant workers around the world.

This year, Thomas Hammarberg, Commissioner for Human Rights at the Council
of Europe joins hundreds of radio and human rights professionals worldwide
to contribute to Radio1812, a global radio event focusing on the rights of
migrants, organised by Brussels based December 18, the international
advocacy and resource centre on the human rights of migrant workers.

Following in the steps of other generous guests such as Mary Robinson and
Louise Arbour, both of whom took part in Radio 1812/2006, Mr Hammarberg has
given his support to this year's event by contributing to a challenging and
enlightening interview that will be available for broadcast, online
listening and to media for redistribution.

A December 18 and London based Colourful Radio co-production, and hosted by
drive-time journalist Henry Bonsu, the interview puts forward the issue of
social and racial tensions and human rights for migrants across Europe. He
will also discuss the situation of migrants, often difficult, in specific
countries such as the UK and Italy, Poland and the Czech Republic.

This insightful interview will be available from midnight GMT on the night
of the 17th to 18th December 2007, for listening, downloading and
re-broadcasting on http://www.radio1812.net, and will also be
broadcasted on 18th
December on Colourful Radio at 3pm GMT on http://www.colourfulradio.com .

In the past week, the team behind December 18 was delighted to announce the
participation of 60 radios worldwide covering countries as diverse as
Indonesia, Nepal, Mali, Spain, Canada and Argentina. More radios have joined
since and the event is now welcoming over 80 radios from around the world.
Additionally, Green MEP Jean Lambert contributed a committed Op-ed looking
back on the developments around the migration and integration debate in the
EU over the past 12 months. This contribution is still available on the
http://www.radio1812.net site.

****Notes for editors: The mission of DECEMBER 18 is to promote and protect
the rights of migrants worldwide. Our goal is that the human rights of all
migrants are recognised and protected effectively, and that an environment
is created for migrants to be full participants in any society. We promote
an approach to migration policies that is based on existing international
and regional human rights instruments and mechanisms.

By gathering broadcast programmes on migration issues throughout the time
zones and by providing on-demand audio streaming and exchange platforms,
Radio 1812 aims to give life and impetus to the voices of migrants
throughout the world.
