Earlier this year forty groups met in Rome for four days of intensive
workshops, discussions and presentations to identify key infrastructural
needs of video based alternative media production and distribution. The
event provided a vibrant cross-pollination of projects in the wider
context of Internet communication; convergent media, growth of user
contributed content and the key movements of Open IPR (intellectual
property rights) & FOSS (Free Open Source Software). For reports see
http://www.transmission.cc/wiki/Reports

Based on existing work by groups active in the field for many years, the
meeting successfully identified a clear set of projects required for
alternative media groups to collaborate on, with the goal of overcome
infrastructural problems of increasing (especially online) visibility
and cooperation.

See list of project proposals http://www.transmission.cc/wiki/Proposals

The overall flavour of the event is participatory and inline with this
way of working people will be invited to add to the current proposals.
As with the Tranmission event held in Rome this summer the people
turning up will contribute to and take part in the talks and panels.

As part of the follow up and communication process of this emerging
network, a UK event is planned in London on the weekend of 13-15th
October 2006. This event is entitled 'Re:Transmission' because
participants will be passing on and developing some of the ideas,
contacts, plans and processes begun at the Rome meeting. Screenings and
panel events on the Saturday afternoon at the British Film Institute are
already booked.

The re:transmission event has is beginning to take shape through some
early conversations and ideas. What is needed to make the event a
reality is people to take roles and responsibilities for ensuring that
the event takes place - and meets our needs. Roles are voluntary, of
course, but many reasonable expenses should be covered. It is vitally
important that if for any reason, one person can't continue in their
role, that they flag this up and hand it over to someone who can.

If you can take responsibility and pleasure from helping make this event
a reality, here are the roles envisaged so far:

a.. event programmer: (at least) 1 person: gathering and proposing
panels, screenings and other events during re:transmission, and making
sure they fit on a sensible timeline - and get delivered in time for
print/publicity deadlines.

b.. venue liaison: 1 person (+ 3 - one from each venue): communicating
with the BFI, Ramparts and Limehouse, making sure events and programme
match resources and availability etc.

c.. publicity: doing and delegating print design for photocopies/
flyers, writing copy, talking to people, mailing mailing lists, putting
people in touch with each other etc.

d.. panel coordination: delegating recruitment to each panel moderator,
making sure panellists know when and where to show up, communicating
with publicity and programming to make sure everyone has latest info etc.

e.. wiki/web/irc/list/comms management and caretaking__: maintaining and
gardening the wiki, listening to mailing lists, irc, and other comms and
making sure important information spreads in the appropriate way.

f.. documentation: recording, photographing and otherwise managing and
collecting materials generated by the event.

If you are up for taking the lead in any of these areas, bearing in mind
you can duck out (if you find a replacement) and can delegate (in
fact... must delegate!) any and all responsibility while maintaining
threads of conversation etc..

Also, if you would like to be available for delegation tasks, though not
taking sole resonsibility for the whole area, please put your name and a
contact down too, so lead role people can delegate to you.
