BBC Scotland news to go really local as country is split into six

BBC Scotland will launch the first of a mini-regional tier of news
services in early 2007, it was revealed last night.
The detail emerged in a separate report on BBC Scotland by the
Broadcasting Council for Scotland (BCS).
The BBC plans to divide Scotland into six regions covered by a
network of 36 video journalists. Their job will be to provide local
television reports available over broadband and digital TV in
addition to the 30-minute Reporting Scotland programme.

Regional text news services will begin in 2006 and the first of the
mini-region TV services will launch in 2007.
The regions covered will be the North-east, Highlands and Islands,
Tayside and Central, Glasgow and the West, Edinburgh and the East,
and Southern Scotland.

The BCS report praised Reporting Scotland for a third year of
audience growth and singled out programme successes such as Totally
Dance School, Gutted, River City, T in the Park and Offside.

There were only passing references to The Gathering Place, the
controversial history of the Scottish Parliament made by IWC Media,
the independent film maker part-owned by the BBC presenter Kirsty
Wark, pictured below. The report said the programme had offered
viewers "the unique perspective of architect Enric Miralles".

The report said Radio Scotland continued to broadcast a "rich range"
of programmes. However, it said the BBC continued to suffer from low
approval ratings in Scotland and that it had to do more to make
politics engaging to a mainstream audience.
