Report: US to switch off analogue before UK
  08 November 2004 11:45

The US is expected to reach full digital television penetration a year
before the UK - in 2014, a new report has said.

The Global Digital TV Forecasts from the Informa Media Group which
looks at 43 countries worldwide predicts the US will reach 100% digital
penetration by 2014 along with Canada, Finland, Ireland and Norway –
the first countries to reach such a milestone.

The UK is expected to follow a year later along with Denmark, Hong
Kong, Japan, South Korea, Sweden and Taiwan. Other countries won’t
follow until 2016.

The report is at odds with government and industry forecasts that the
UK will be ready for digital switch-over in 2012 – a target that has
already slipped from the earlier 2006 to 2010 bid.

The report does however put the UK in the top-spot for the highest
digital penetration rate. By the end of this year, the report predicts
the UK will have a penetration of 60% - the highest in the world –
although it will slip to third place by 2010.

The number of new digital homes across Europe is expected to jump from
6.6 million additions this year to 13.2 million in 2010. By 2010 there
should be 108.5 million digital television homes across the continent –
29% of the worldwide total.
