Hi

A key driver for digital migration to the DAB platform for the BBC and
large commercial broadcasters will be the uptake of DAB radio by car
manufacturers, and DAB radios being installed in new cars as standard.
Growth of the DAB platform's market share will trigger migration to
digital when radio listening on all digital platforms reaches 50%, as
recommended in the DRWG's report
(http://www.commedia.org.uk/2008/12/19/digital-radio-working-group-report/).

But a blogger attending the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) taking
place this week in Los Angeles, the "world's largest consumer
technology tradeshow", says that DAB is not making a strong showing
there with only 6 out of the 2,700 exhibiting companies listing 'DAB'
in their descriptions:

The BBC's technology show Click is at CES this week and they
demonstrate a potential competitor to in-car DAB radio - the world's
first Internet car radio:

Of course a device such as this could prove to be good news for both
community radio and small commercial broadcasters alike in the face of
digital migration around the world. Just imagine the ability to be
able to listen to your favourite community radio stations from all
over the UK and the world whilst driving in your car... The radio
works by connecting to your mobile phone by Bluetooth and using your
phone's Internet data connection.

To catch the show watch the BBC News Channel Sun 04:30, 11:30, Mon
00:30 or watch it online now using the BBC iPlayer:

The relevant segment starts about 6 minutes into the programme.

Interestingly enough the Internet radio station that the BBC reporter
accesses happens to be CMA member and Canstream webcaster Asian Star
101.6 (http://www.asianstar1016.co.uk/) at about 6' 20" - hip, hip,
hooray!

Best regards
