Funding Available for Community Radio Projects

A new project run by the Community Media Association (CMA) is offering
grants of £1,000 to Community Radio stations.

“Comliteracy” is a Community Radio Media Literacy project run by the CMA
and funded through Ofcom. The project will use Community Radio as a tool
to raise awareness and understanding of Media Literacy issues.

‘Comliteracy’ follows on from a successful pilot project run by the CMA
in 2006. The pilot (also funded by Ofcom) looked at using Community
Radio as an awareness raising tool for Media Literacy. Two stations took
part in the pilot project and produced Public Service Announcements and
programming on various Media Literacy issues. To find out about the work
of the pilots please go to:
http://www.commedia.org.uk/learning-and-skills/media-literacy/pilot-projects/

‘Comliteracy’ aims to build on the success of the pilot. Community Radio
stations are invited to apply for funding to carry out the following
activities:
·	Produce and broadcast 3 Media Literacy Public Service Announcements (PSA)
·	Produce and broadcast a Media Literacy programme (min length 20 mins)
·	Deliver a Media Literacy workshop at the station in partnership with
the CMA

All of the Media Literacy PSAs and programmes produced will be submitted
to the CMA and uploaded onto the CMA Media Literacy website. This will
enable the material to be downloaded by other Community Radio stations
and re-broadcast.

The CMA has 15 grants of £1,000 to distribute to successful Community
Radio stations. To apply for a grant you must complete the application
form available at:
http://www.commedia.org.uk/learning-and-skills/media-literacy/comliteracy/

The deadline for applications is Friday 9th Feb 2007.

Paul Steele, Learning & Skills Manager at the CMA, said: “This is a
great opportunity for Community Radio to get involved in the emerging
Media Literacy arena and add value to the work currently being
undertaken. The Community Media sector has been at the forefront of
media literacy practice for some time, enabling members of the public to
directly engage with, produce and understand the media. This project
will help to further develop and highlight the sectors achievements in
this area of work.”
