Gaza Strip set for a taste of Sheffield Live!

The city's pioneering Sheffield Live! is set to broadcast across
Palestine this afternoon in a major coup for the 87.7FM community radio
station.

A specially recorded show is being beamed directly to the Gaza
Strip-based Al-Hurria station who will broadcast it to millions of
people living in the region.

The show comprises a performance by Al-assria, a 15-strong theatre group
made up of 10 - 18-year-old Palestinian refugees who are based in the
country's Jabalia refugee camp who will also be at Sheffield's Merlin
Theatre tonight (Wednesday, June 29).

They will also be discussing issues on Sheffield Live! 87.7FM around
their lives as refugees in a debate programme which starts at noon.

Sangita Basudev, chief executive of city-centre based media centre The
Drum who operate Sheffield Live!, said: This is a really exciting
development for Sheffield Live! and is a great example of local going
global. I hope Sheffield people tune into 87.7FM and listen to Al-assria
and the Palestinian debate programme.

Sheffield listeners can tune into the show at 12 noon tomorrow
(Wednesday, June 29) on 87.7FM or you can pick them up on the Internet
at www.sheffieldlive.org.uk if you live outside the broadcast area.

The Drum, which is situated in the former National Centre for Popular
Music, first launched in 2002 and now boasts over 1,300 members and is
dedicated to giving a voice to local people and communities largely
ignored by mainstream media.

From learning how to be a radio presenter to free Internet access, The
Drum has spent the last three years acting as a lifeline and career
springboard for hundreds of people.

Anyone wanting to get involved in Sheffield Live! or benefit from The
Drums training courses should contact them on 0114 281 4092 or email
sheffieldlive at thedrum.org.uk

Sheffield Live! broadcasts until July 13.

The Drum is funded by the Home Office Challenge Fund.
