For example, our local commercial station is Sun FM. They broadcast to Sunderland and surrounding towns, but the current local DAB multiplex covers everything from here to the Scottish Borders as it follows the coverage area for the Tyne and Wear ILR station. It’s basically pointless for them being on that. So, a local Sunderland SSDAB suits their needs and ours. The size of their group is irrelevant. It’s about coverage area and providing a digital route for all. This might mean that you will need to share a mux with local arch rivals, but you even have the opportunity to run the mux yourself and charge them rent.

Just a thought

Richard

From: cma-l-bounces@mailman.commedia.org.uk [mailto:cma-l-bounces@mailman.commedia.org.uk] On Behalf Of Canalside Community Radio Ltd
Sent: 17 July 2017 10:19
To: 'The Community Media Association Discussion List'
Subject: [!!! The question was :- I don’t think there are any (as such) small Commercial FM Stations ? they don’t exist. I use the analogy because in the case of selective memory loss, this was one of the original arguments in relation to restrictions. Commercial Stations claiming that they were ‘’’small’’’ ‘’’tiny’’’’ and that their commercial viability was threatened. This was happening even though many of them were part of larger groups.
