It may well be that they are using spin, but since Martin specifically referred to the artists getting paid (or not) in the context of PPL revenues I took PPL's figures for what proportion of their revenue they say goes to performers.

Reporting on the 2015 financial year, for example, the PPL chairman said "2015 saw record levels of collections and distributions. A total of £197 million was collected whilst distributable revenue grew over 5% to £169.8 million, of which £69.9 million was for performers." [my emphasis].

He also said: "To give you a measure of the sheer growth and progress we have made: ten years ago these numbers were £97.9 million (collections) and £84.4 million (total distributable revenue). Last year over 65,000 performers received at least one payment from PPL ... "

I understand that to enable this distribution PPL has now made it mandatory for mandatory for recording rights holders to provide it with basic performer line-up information for all UK-commissioned 2016 releases, and it was probably a factor in the joint venture agreements between PPL and PRSfM. PPL also has a secondary board purely for considering performer-related matters, in addition to the main company board.

Alex

On 31 May 2017 at 00:16 James Cridland <james@cridland.net> wrote:

>I didn’t suggest the artists shouldn’t be paid – they would in effect be invited to effectively donate 0.1% of their dues

PPL is for record companies, not artists.
