network of small market towns of similar size to
Wetherby, where Tempo FM is located. For me
when considering a question like this I find it
helpful to refer back to our shared Community
Media Charter – available to read on a permanent
basis on the front page of the CMA website. The
sixth paragraph states that we as broadcasters
‘ensure a right of access to production
facilities and platforms for minority and
To me this means simply making sure the full
range of voices are heard. There are lots of
proven ways - and many still to be invented - to
ensure this. Sometimes it simply means being
pro-active about encouraging and supporting
those marginalised groups to come forward and
make themselves heard.
In the town where I work from – Bridgwater – we
run annual Bridgwater Together events where the
many different linguistic communities that live
and work in the area come together to share
food, stories, music – and yes – debate the
issues of the day. We as Somerset Film (working
with several community radio stations as well)
provide a platform for that to take place, as a
registered charity we can’t take sides
obviously. By sharing a day together the
diverse communities demonstrate collective
strength and harmony, and that is a powerful
message without the need for further
explanation.

I say all this not as any kind of criticism of
anyone’s position, but we are facing probably
the greatest democratic crisis since WW2 and
given the shameful nature of much of the
mainstream media content recently we can’t –
shouldn’t – ignore it, or simply leave it to
the authorities to give us their line on it.
Instead let’s get our creative hats on and
find all the ways we can to ‘promote and protect
cultural diversity’.
attitude of the young people who were
hurling racist and xenophobic abuse, was
the amount of people who stood facing the

It’s been four years since I was involved
in running a community radio station but I
still speak to many stations and support
projects that work with the community
radio sector. My understanding of the
reason community radio even exists is that
it gives a voice to those who may struggle
to have one in any other way, and supports
community understanding and cohesion. If
ever there was a time that was needed,
it’s now. The police have a job to do,
absolutely, but CR has a much wider reach
and could produce some content that
pre-empts the issue rather than responds
to it.
I always think back to a show I produced
with a group of volunteers which looked at
the similarities between the beliefs of a
variety of communities in the area I
worked and was broadcast at the same time
as a visit from the English Defence
League, it wasn’t popular with everyone
but it certainly got some people thinking.

I’m not as involved in the sector right
now, but am still an active advocate for
it. I’m not one to start an argument (ok,
sometimes I am), but I think this is an
amazing idea that could really make a
difference. But more than that, I think CR
has a responsibility to address issues
like this, otherwise what differentiates
you from your local commercial station.

I must agree with Ian. I've always been of
the view that to talk about a problem can
be the creation of a problem ever since I
winced when an external youth worker, from
a city centre, came to a club where I was
helping, started talking about
glue-sniffing which was a problem we had
not encountered at our club. Fortunately
the problem was not created but I thought
it was irresponsible. The laws exist to
deal with these unsavoury matters so the
authorities are the place to which these
should be reported and not the airwaves.
