</head><body><p>Glynn<br></p><p>Are you sure it is correct to say that there is an unlicensed 5GHz option for STL use? My understanding was that legally a licence is always needed for a 5.8GHz STL link because only the licensed frequencies are permitted to be used where both ends of the link are fixed (what Ofcom calls Fixed Wireless Access, FWA). The unlicensed frequencies are only for use where one end of the link is mobile (eg an access point serving laptops or smartphones), and are I believe limited to 25mW eirp, which is sufficient only for very short links. </p><p>Even if I am wrong that an FWA licence is mandatory, as you say, the licensed option is preferable, because with a licence you can go up to 4W. I'm not sure how 'clean' it will remain in some areas though as there are many drone operators illegally using unlicensed high-powered 5.8GHz video links for their 'birds'. Fortunately the STL links tend to be quite narrow angle which helps of course, as does the 4W power option.<br></p><p>Absence of twigs isn't at all necessary by the way, though always preferable. While the overall path most definitely needs to be free of solid obstruction such as buildings or terrain, I have installed 5GHz links where the transmitter is hidden inside eaves behind 20mm of solid wood and in fibreglass cabins. And en route, especially towards the middle of the path where the Fresnel zone is largest, even a substantial branch may be no problem.<br></p><p>Things are more finicky with 2.4GHz wifi links of course because that frequency is selectively absorbed by water, so vegetation can have a severe effect.
