<b>AN EVENING WITH THE CYPRUS COMMUNITY MEDIA CENTRE:<br>
MEDIA ACROSS THE DIVIDE IN CYPRUS</b><br>

This evening discussion will showcase the work of the Cyprus
Community Media Centre (CCMC), a not-for-profit organisation that
works to encourage community media in Cyprus, and to support local
organidations in communicating their message to the public.
Representatives of CCMC will talk about the challenges of working in
the media across the divide in Cyprus, the opportunities for
improving trust and understanding through the media, as well as the
impact of its work since its opening in late 2009. A Question and
Answer session will follow.<br>

<b><br>
Speakers </b><br>
<br>
<b>Larry Fergeson</b> is the Project Manager of the Cyprus Community
Media Centre. He holds an undergraduate degree in broadcast
journalism from Texas State University, and an MA in Conflict
Resolution from Portland State University. He has lived in Cyprus
since 2005 working with civil society organisations island-wide to
promote peace and reconciliation. Larry has over 15 years experience
as a radio and television producer/presenter and media related
consultancies for the European Union and United Nations. He is also
trained facilitator in the Structured Democratic Dialogue
methodology process.<br>
<br>
<b>Beran Djemal</b> is the Outreach Officer for the Turkish Cypriot
community at the Cyprus Community Media Centre. She holds a BA in
Political Science from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara,
Turkey, and an MA in International Conflict and Cooperation from
Stirling University, Scotland. She has been active in civil society
for many years, most recently with The Management Centre of the
Mediterranean, working in fields such as peacebuilding, human
rights, and inter-cultural learning. Beran has previously worked as
a journalist at Afrika and Cyprus Today newspapers, and has
collaborated on a freelance basis with ARD TV (Germany), Le Figaro
and Le Monde (France).<br>
<br>
<b>Michalis Simopoulos</b> is Project Coordinator of the
Collaborative Media Initiative at the Cyprus Community Media Centre.
He holds a BA in History and Politics from the University of
Nottingham, and an MSc in International Relations from the London
School of Economics. He previously worked in the Press Office of the
Cyprus High Commission in London, and has worked in research on
public policy issues and international development with INDEX
Research and Dialogue (Cyprus), and transitional justice and
reconciliation at International Conflict Research (Northern
Ireland). He currently serves on the board of the Cyprus Island-Wide
NGO Development Platform.<br>
<br>
<b>Sophia Arnaouti</b> is a member of the Management Committee of
the Cyprus Community Media Centre, representing the Peace Centre
Cyprus, of which she is the Vice-President. She holds an MA in
Conflict Resolution from the Department of Peace Studies, University
of Bradford and a degree in Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology from
the School of Philosophy, University of Athens. For the last two
years Sophia has worked at the Ministry of Labour and Social
Insurance. She is trained in mediation and negotiation and has
worked as a mediator in the UK, has gained field experience in Sri
Lanka, and has participated in Peacekeeping training for the Royal
Military Academy at Sandhurst, UK.<br>
