The news media appreciate tags to hang stories on.<span> </span>Without a tag we are just one of many groups asking for more money.</font></p>

<p><font face="Arial" size="3">A sensible idea, Steve, <b>1%</b> equals approx <b>£35 million</b>.<span> </span>This amount for community media would help take the sector forward.<span> </span>This <b>1% of the licence fee for community media</b> (<strong><u>or an equivalent amount</u></strong>) is the message that I have been trying to get across at the last few CMA Annual General Meetings and elsewhere for the last five years. </font></p>
<p><font size="3"><font face="Arial"><span> </span><b>The most important thing is that ONE PER CENT does not sound much!</b></font></font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3"></font> </p>
<p><font face="Arial"><b><span style="font-size:14pt">NOW IS THE TIME FOR ACTION</span></b><span style="font-size:14pt"></span></font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">To have any chance of success community broadcasters must all pull together to get the message across.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">David Cameron is making the point that a <b>1%</b> saving is possible in economic terms for the country, so why not a <b>1%</b> “shaving” at the BBC to fund community media?<span> </span>If this came to pass then the BBC could take credit for helping to establish Community Media.<span> </span>I’m sure no one would mind the BBC taking credit, so long as we got the money!</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">Members must have an agenda for using the money.<span> </span>It cannot be just for expenses for established stations, although some form of annual grant would need to be worked out.<span> </span>Money for established radio stations would have to have some form of match funding, whether it be advertising, grants or whatever.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">Possibilities –</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">Regional training programmes for things such as technical, documentary making, programming, presenting etc.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">Involvement in radio and television for the underprivileged and disengaged members of the community.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">Assistance for establishing community television.</font></p>

<p><font face="Arial"><b><span style="font-size:14pt">ACTION</span></b><span style="font-size:14pt"></span></font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">Stations should invite all prospective candidates into their studios and explain the desperate need for funding, and how <b>1%</b> could make all the difference.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">It should be possible to have a brief hand-out, outlining the basics details of our <b>1%</b> requirement for community media, to give to every prospective candidate in the election. </font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">Try and arrange on-air discussions for candidates to let them see the value of community radio.<span> </span>Take care to be within electoral law.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">Be present at the count as the radio station representing the local community.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial" size="3">Plus any other action that gets the message to the people who can make the decision.</font></p>
