point of view. I also endorse Glyn’s idea of having an agency which could
represent all community stations and block-sell advertising to the big agencies…Considering
the amount of money big companies and organisations spend on their marketing,
and not all community radios are able to tap into that – it will definitely
take some pressure out of community radio stations. Thanks again for all the
input!

Hi,

I'd advise to approach some of the advertising agencies
rather than individual stations. Typically they would price by head
of official audience reach. However they typically run big regional
or national campaigns so "can't be bothered" with small-fry community
stations, even if they do get a lot of listeners when added together, due to
coordination work required to negotiate withe ach station.

I reckon there is scope for some enterprising person to
set-up an agency which could represent all community stations, and
block-sell advertising to the big agencies - taking a cut for themselves.

My brother works at South East radio in Wexford Ireland - I
could see if I can get hold of their rate card. It may not be immediately
transferrable, they are a big regional station, but due to low population
density of Ireland, probably only cover total population of 200k or so.
It may give one indication.

Hello to everyone…

I just need a bit of guidance with advertising rates. I have been trying to
research the rate cards of commercial radio stations for reference but not
having any luck. Would anyone have an idea of how much most commercial radio
stations charge for ad slots? How do they differ with the rates that community
radio stations charge?

Advertising is still one of the main problems in our sector, people do not
realize the community radio stations actually cover “majority” of
the listeners because of the diverse programming we offer compared to a very
narrow target of most commercial radio stations, i.e. 16-24, etc. Has
there been a study on how effective advertising in community radio stations
are? I know that there are some research done by OFCOM and RAB about the
effectiveness of advertising in radio, but it only involved Commercial Radio
stations.

Thanks in advance!
