Community and Small Scales Commercial Stations Need to Up Skill or Face Closure

MONOGRAM MEDIA released the results from their second UK radio survey which assesses stations use of digital media. 

 

The results from this annual survey, along with other recent industry data has been brought together in a report called Using Radio for Digital Advertising, Are You Ready?

The report shows that, while large commercial radio stations have embraced businesses shift to online advertising, community and small local radio stations have not. 

 

In 2018 the UK radio industry is likely to see significant changes as commercial radio stations are freed from format constraints and also from the introduction of Small Scale DAB stations. 

 

As local markets are segmented more stations will inevitably be chasing fewer advertisers. This reduction will be compounded as businesses increasingly see digital advertising as their first choice due to the ability to monitor their return on investment more easily.

 

In summary: 

This report looks at community and small commercial radio stations ability to support businesses who are keen to access a local audience using digital channels. It shows that the UK’s smallest radio stations are underperforming their larger commercial counterparts mainly due to a lack of skills.   

 

Community radio stations must improve their digital capability through training or by using outside expertise. It is highly recommended that stations also widen their advertising offering to include their digital channels and increase their engagement with local and national businesses.
