Extended Description

The new Connected Communities Innovation Fund has been set up by the
Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) which is providing
£4 million in grants and Nesta, which is providing £750,000 in
non-financial support.

The fund is designed to encourage more people to volunteer alongside public
services, and inspire new ways of giving for those who have not previously
volunteered. The fund has a specific focus on helping people aged 50 and
over, those who want to give time infrequently rather than routinely, and
those who want to give their time and skills from the comfort of their own
home to good causes.

The fund will support innovations that address one of four different social
issues:

   - Bringing communities closer to create shared resources and support one
   another.
   - Supporting community resilience in emergencies.
   - Improving the environment.
   - Creating new forms of digital social action.

The funding is offered through two separate tracks: Early Stage Ideas and
Growing Great Ideas.

------------------------------
Eligible Expenditure

The funding is for not-for-profit activities that mobilise the time and
talents of people through social action to create outcomes in any of the
following themes (priorities):

the time and talents of people within local communities to share resources,
create reciprocal models of support and enable people to help each other in
   key priorities within communities.
   - Community resilience in emergencies: innovations that mobilise the
time and talents of people to enable communities to prepare for, respond
   to, and recover from emergencies.
   - Digital Social Action: innovations that harness the opportunities of
digital technologies to help mobilise the time and talents of people in new
ways that suit 21st century lifestyles and needs.
