[cma-l] Digital radio event in Glasgow - 23rd February

It’s a similar situation in the rural areas of Scotland – the most obvious services for any non-profit station to add to a local DAB MUX would be BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio nan Gàidheal. These are the two most popular stations in the region, but are not on the BBC DAB MUXes (because there is no room for them after BBC Parliament, Asian Network, R6 Music et al).

Income from renting MUX capacity to the BBC could potentially cover the costs of the local DAB MUX without increasing any commercial competition for our own station. Possibly!

Hello Richard

One way to read this, is that community radio stations are not-for-profit. That is, any surplus from the organisation is maintained in the business.

At a guess, if Eden FM were to apply and run a SSDAB holding the licence, then any surplus from operating it, is part of our not-for-profit operation.

Not sure how we would manage what level of services we would want to add in our very small (15,000) population. Our most obviouis ones actually, are BBC Cumbria and the Beyer station CFM, neither of who have any DAB presence. I don't see we would want to have 15 additional out of area services comepting with us.

Interesting times :)

Not only interesting but potentially of great importance!

At the AGM I argued it was critical that if community radio had to migrate to DAB that the multiplex they were on should owned by the community radio stations on it and could then be used as a source of income generation (by ‘renting’ space to commercial operators.

I’m not sure that ‘multiplex are to be provided on a non-commercial basis’ is exactly saying but it goes a long way towards it.

Regards

Richard

Hi david,

I hadnt seen the bill had been published thank you ever so much for that.

A quick read shows the following points:

1. any person who has an interest in a national or local multiplex is disqualified to hold a SSDAB multiplex license

2. multiplex are to be provided on a non-commercial basis

3. provide capacity reserved for community radio

All very interesting!

Hi Martin

At this stage many of the participants in the trial(s) are ‘not-for-profit’. Probably not intentionally!

I’m not sure if everyone in this place is aware of this http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/cbill/2016-2017/0028/17028.pdf

Probably worth digesting this and it’s implications before commenting. Give me a day! I’m not 100% behind the wording in this.

David

David,

It would be great to get your insight into what might be the barriers for community radio?

Also do you have any services that are "not for profit" so community radio but not an existing CR license holder?

Hi Nick

We missed you at the Manchester event. But great to see all the other stations that did make the effort to attend.

I can only speak for the Manchester ‘trial’ and it is going well, thank you. 18 stations currently: 14 DAB+ and 4 DAB; with 3 more joining imminently.

It’s a real shame that there are only 3 community radio stations onboard - Gaydio; Unity; and Heritage . I have a feeling this will be replicated across the country and that minimuxes may not be the alternative digital home for community radio that the DCMS is hoping it will be.

This should be a sell out ……………. Glasgow is a bit nearer to Norway than Manchester :) with FM now gone bon yoyage expect to see lots of people in attendance adorning Helmets with Horns on them

LOL

By the way do we have an update on these DAB ‘’’trials’’’ are they going OK or are there teething problems at the moment ???

Following the success of <http://radiotoday.co.uk/2016/12/dab-digital-radio-celebrated-in-manchester/> the last digital radio event in Manchester, Digital Radio UK is organising another digital radio event in Glasgow!

Thursday 23 February, 6-8pm (time tbc)

29 Glasgow, Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow

All community radio stations in the area and beyond are invited.

This event is definitely worth attending for anybody interested in the development of digital radio in the UK.
