The "limited supply of bandwidth" is an utter falsehood - sorry.
There are 38 channels available - 7A to 13F - which follow the heritage allocations for European marine VHF channels in  Band III from 174 to 240 MHz - see the chart attached and here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_high_frequency#/media/File:VHF_Usage.svg

Agreed, there are other (mostly analogue - which won't be affected by digital data) services in that part of the spectrum which may not be able to migrate, but depending on location there is more spectrum available than we shall ever need. The problem is, as with Band II analogue spectrum allocation, the human inertia required to carry out the work.

The high costs you refer to are dictated by the big groups because legislation allows them free rein to be as greedy as they wish.
Your radio "back channel" concept is also a non-starter with RF propagation because it requires the receiver to have a transmission function with a system to collect the data - which is not at all feasible within this level of technology.
The words are  good - the concept is sky pie - sorry!

It’s hard to conceive not having all the broadcast platforms we do. My favourite by far is DRM but let’s not start that debate. ☺

The UK was at the vanguard of digital radio in the mid 90s but lost its way. The limited supply of bandwidth still causes high costs today. The ‘fear of loss’ for stations who jumped to digital means they have been saddled with high carriage charges which (possibly naively) may have been put into more local content.

I think the biggest change to radio is yet to come when the system is a closed loop - that is to say when stations can identify, using a back-channel, who is listening and where in real time. Currenty only possible on plaftorms like Sky and RadioPlayer.

Radio via the digital cable system
Matt Hancock says he wants the UK to be a world leader?
That would be nice.
Because at the moment we seem particularly good at finding blind alleys and not wanting to turn round and find the light again.

Not lemming like, but because standing still isn’t an option. You’ll effectively be going backwards.

Research:

Digital technology is an enabler for new products and services and the underlying busy model through which they are delivered. However, their hasn’t ever been a case where the introduction of technology hasn’t also meant a change in human behaviour.

We are in serious danger here of being overwhelmed by Gobbledegook as opposed  to the principle of the Crystalmark.
Is Matt Hancock really the  "Minister for Digital"?

Forgive me - but can you be a Minister for an adjective?

And we are now intended  to believe that "Culture is Digital" - are we?

Why this blind Lemming-like rush to anything that has the tag "digital"?



I really do think that we need a proper comprehensible translation of this piece for those of us who use and speak normal every-day English.

Matt Hancock, Minister for both Digital and Culture, has today launched a new Culture is Digital project with a conversation between Government and both tech and the cultural world about how to push this synergy further.

This project builds on a commitment in the Culture White Paper to review the digitisation of our public collections and the enhancement of the online cultural experience. In the recently published Digital Strategy, the Government made commitments to driving digital skills, increasing digital participation and unlocking the power of data.

The Government also stated a clear ambition for the UK to be the best country in the world to launch and grow a digital business and to trial innovative technology. Alongside this, there is an ongoing commitment to artistic and cultural excellence which is the envy of the world.

Matt Hancok wants to look more closely at "creating hybrid content, mixing traditional story-telling techniques with emerging technologies". This requires an ongoing dialogue so artists and creative industries know of opportunities as they arise and the digital sector can realise the full potential of each innovation.

This initiative has four key themes:
?         Content Infrastructure: Ensuring the digitisation of collections, aggregation, interoperability and knowledge are in place for digital accessibility to thrive.
?         Cultural content and technology: Enabling new formats and mediums for cultural production, experiences and art forms.
?         Access and Participation: Supporting new forms of cultural and digital participation and boost community engagement in culture through digital distribution and content.
?         Digital skills, IP and business models in cultural organisations: Supporting cultural organisations to develop the right digital skills and capability to drive innovation and resilience.
