INVITATION TO A SCREENING IN LONDON'S WEST END
The Hippodrome, Leicester Square WC2
Thursday 7th July at 6.30pm / film at 7pm

"IT'S A CAVENDISH THING"
a film by Chris Haydon
a Community TV Trust production

A year in the making, this documentary tells the story of
Cavendish School, a special needs school in Bermondsey,
south London, which teaches 11-16 year olds who have been
referred from various London boroughs. Some call it a
'last chance saloon'.

Knee-jerk reaction writes off such young people whose
behaviour exhibits powerful anti-social tendencies which
are roundly judged by many.

Family background, dyslexia, ADHD, history of abuse ...
these are some of the factors at play in these young lives
which the Cavendish staff wrestle with.

Storytelling is shared by a core group of the young people,
by members of staff, the school's founder Cheryl Stepton, by
an educational psychologist, a parent, a former pupil, the
police liaison officer ...
Woven into the film are extracts from film dramas the students
have produced over the past two years with CTVT, plus some
CCTV footage which captures a raw classroom incident, analysis
of which highlights the complexity of Cavendish life.
The fact that many young people move on into further education,
training and employment, is a triumph for the dedication of
the staff and their belief in the possibility of transformation.
