The etymology of the word amateur is from the Romance languages:

amare (Latin: to love) -> amator (Latin: lover) -> amatore (Italian ->
amateur (French, late 18th C)


An amateur was someone who participated in an activity for the love of it.

Nothing to be ashamed of. Plenty to be proud of.
