Community Pirate Station ???? that's a new one on me Derrick ? I
could be wrong, but the Pirates I have heard as I have travelled around the
Country tend to focused on one style of music or one style of banter or a
topic of promotion ... it is very rare they make programming for the
Community as a whole ?? however, as I have said before, I could have
missed something or been tuned into the wrong ones.
When we first started there was a place in Tytherington near the old Rugby
club grounds where for an area of about 1000 yards square you could clearly
pick up a Pirate Station. This is about 8 years ago and the Station was
actually quite proud at being a Pirate (they boasted on-air) the music
was basically all hip hop and rap and nothing else ... there was bad
language as well in a lot of the material. I listened for about half an hour
and then they disappeared .. I was as high as a kite by the time I'd
finished LOL this was on a Sunday morning. As a matter of interest
I went back the following Sunday but they weren't there.
As it happens I was refereeing an under 18's football match about three
weeks later on a Saturday morning. The rugby pitch is now a footie pitch
hence why I was there . and hey presto . they were there again another
blast of hip hop and rap. They never mentioned frequency though. Even though
I assumed they were on 102.8 or 102.75 ??? I returned again on the
Sunday morning and they were there again ! I tried Mon - Fri
they were not there ... and I did try again after that. I have never heard
them since apart from as I say a few pecks here and there on a weekend. I
don't know, I am only guessing, but it could be them ????
Saturday and a Sunday we always tend to have a few more '''peck peck peck
pecking''' sounds on our FM Service .... Ofcom have confirmed that it is
possibly Pirate activity Yarrr ! ahoy thar !
And yes, please come onto the message board and say what you feel from the
heart. Replies to the comments ought to be the same without getting personal
or accusing someone of having a rant.
As I have said though, if folk do rant it's no wonder with the debacle
that we have each had to go through, some worse than others.

I for one applaud Roy for his honest comments, sometime people forget how
things started....
This year Gloucester FM has been celebrating 15 years of broadcasting, GFM
96.6 was born after the "community pirate station" was shut down. Once they
were taken of air by the authorities it soon became clear, that the station
had to be replaced, the commercial station and the BBC were not playing the
music or interacting with community that GFM serves
I have had many inquiries about applying for a community radio license from
people who run pirate stations, while its their aspiration to be legal, what
we legal station have to go through to continue broadcasting has put them
off and will continue to put them off until funding is available to help
community radio station with their core running costs
Roy, thank you for hiring us the kit for our first RSL broadcast in October
2000, without you. we might not be here now, I for one will not forget how
the "community pirate station" inspired me to get GFM on air legally Emoji

Interesting Robb
The sad thing in all of this is that when I write something like this and it
gets placed on the message board there always seems to be some condescending
clot who says ''he's having a rant'' I think the first thing
everyone needs to learn in Community Radio is that if someone says something
with a bit of fire and passion behind it, it doesn't mean they are having a
rant.
I sussed all this nonsense many Moons ago. The ones that write ''rant'' are
actually in disagreement and they feel that writing that someone is ranting
in someway takes the sting out the tail. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't .
?? it certainly doesn't wash with me.
I think it is nice and refreshing to see Roy and Robb expressing their
opinions. I agree with some of it and disagree with other bits, but I
certainly know where they are coming from.
I now await patiently for Senor Plonker to put his/her three-pennith worth
in and accuse both Roy and Robb for having a rant. If it is the case ...
then RANT AWAY I SAY

For someone who has been on the receiving end of bad judgement by the GPO,
Radio Authority & Ofcom may I congratulate Roy for his frank assessment.
Pirate Radio has made a significant contribution to broadcasting in this
country & it's sad that politicians don't recognise it. Pirate Radio , not
the BBC, has been the backbone of innovation and others have followed.
Luckily we now have the internet where freedom of expression & creative
thought is at the forefront. The BBC has a fantastic opportunity to embrace
the spirit of pirate radio through the numerous community stations that are
still broadcasting but I fear that they will not grasp the nettle.
Meanwhile, out here in the Cotswolds, our community internet radio station
is coming up to its eighth anniversary, all done without the help of Ofcom
or the BBC, we do it efficiently & cost effectively.
Meanwhile the plodding bureaucrats continue to drag community radio down &
the Community Media Association sits by whilst the industry burns.
The sector needs a complete rethink, it needs support from Ofcom, less
interference & more praise for the sterling work that the thousands of
volunteers put in each week.

I don't really comment on this forum and this may be my last post.
Community radio and pirate radio are forever entwined.
How did Broadcast warehouse ,SBS and Radica your transmission providers get
going????
Could I possibly suggest that pirate radio may have been involved in their
transmitter testing and development
If you don't understand this comment then then you have no concept of the
evolution of this sector of the broadcast industry and how it has got you on
air today.
You should be grateful for Pirate radio or you would not have a UK made
transmitter.
DJ Uncle has been walking around with a Police tracking bracelet on his
ankle after the last arrest.
The Police supported his station as did local politicians. But WHY because
it acted as as mouthpiece to calm local flash points.
He has tried many times to go legit and has no chance in hell. He is not
your enemy he should be applaulded for his work at great personal cost and
you should work together.
Don't get sniffy with all pirates KISS and XFM where there once.
I would like to state I have not been part of pirate radio, mainly because I
had day jobs in my early 20's with the BBC, Radio Luxemberg 208 and Soho
production studios,
So I could hear my recordings on the radio every night anyway.
What disturbs me is a lack of understanding of cultures other than your own
comfort zones.
A pirate is just this weeks illegal immigrant as far as you all seem to be
concerned.
Don't forget illegal is a moving target, it was illegal to be GAY not so
long ago.
