That's the way it seems to go. If a group make a hit record then the copyright for that record lasts for 50 years. Depending on the contract they will all get a split. But remember the poor old session musicians who played for a fee!
If that afore mentioned band had 4 members and had their biggest hits in the 60's something is about to happen. The band members Saul,Ron,Dingo and the other one will be getting money at the moment or their estates will if they are dead. That was due to end after 50 years. However Saul and Ron wrote the music and lyrics and the others just played. Saul and Ron under the new protection will get paid but the others won't.
There is more; Saul and Ron and or their estates will get payment 70 years from the authors death.
However copyright is not just singing. If you are reading from a book or making a radio drama or for that matter recording the local school's nativity play you need to check the ownership details. The nativity play will have been written by someone. Ok the Jesus and 3 wise men bit is fairly generic but the script involving them arriving in a private jet and offering The Messiah an ipad, a year's subscription to sky and a timeshare in Tenerife is a living author's invention and they will want paying. This copyright will run out 70 years after the author's death but if you are interested you may like to look at the case of JM Barry and Great Ormond Street Hospital. You will be safe with airing that reading of Macbeth from the book you stole from the school library in 1968! The Author is long dead and the book's copyright expires 25 years from publication.
