[cma-l] Digest, Vol 69, Issue 28

Alan - that was remarked on many times in my hearing by some of the purists who don't thing that CR should have any element of commercialism - either in style or business operation.I know that Ofcom observed it as well - and kept quiet for reasons best known to itself. As you might presume, I feel that the business aspect should be the first priority - but on-air sound is equally vital to attract and keep listenership. The aspect of service to "the community" used as a noun has indeed become a hobby-horse for lots of other broadcasters. My point was that as an adjective the word is still derided by most.
---------------------------------------------------------
Ian, I quite agree! There was no reference on or off air to ‘Community’ when I ran The Bay in Poole & Bournemouth. To us it smacked of a bunch of pipe smoking, cardigan wearing local busybody radio amateurs, just half a step up from Hospital Radio. This could not have been further from the truth. But, the word is now being used everywhere and is seen as an advantage. It’s all over local BBC, and I even heard a commercial station use it in a positioning statement. Kind RegardsAlan For the record I started in Hospital Radio and got my an amateur radio licence when I was 16 – both of which were great fun and helped get me started in the industry in the 70s – so no offence intended to either group. Subject: Re: [cma-l] cma-l Digest, Vol 69, Issue 28There is a half-way house here you know ……………… a UK Nationwide Community Radio sweeper or (2 or 3) leading into an ad break, and then the Stations own idents coming out of the ad break into the song or feature. Looks like I’ve stirred up a hornets nest again ooooops or is it just created discussion and got the old grey matter bobbing and weaving. And to top it all off I now have a great big OSTRICH EGG all over my face (you couldn’t right the script) LOL Here’s me spouting off again about the usual, having a little pop here and a little pop there, plus a bit of tongue in cheek and a bit of sarcasm and then the odd mini rant or two …. Then mentioning briefly the community radio fund, and hey presto at 4:30pm this evening we get informed that we are going to (at last) receive a medium sized tickle £££ I’d better shut my cake-hole and go get my face washed off J Dare I say it ? yippeeeeeeeeee and Hallelujah Nick From: cma-l-bounces at mailman.commedia.org.uk [mailto:cma-l-bounces at mailman.commedia.org.uk] On Behalf Of Den Packer

Subject: Re: [cma-l] cma-l Digest, Vol 69, Issue 28 CSR is looking to boost its standing within the community and if this CR-wide imaging is well received then we'd look to be a part of it too. Though for us I would suggest that the parts where a station name is sung/said is still kept local and produced in-house as, in our case at least, our volunteers have worked hard the past 12 months to redefine our station sound and line up some great voices and a solid imaging package for us. I think bumpers would sit a lot better for us than having it throughout.

Then again, maybe all my guys would need to be swayed is a demo.

If anyone wants an eee-by-gum then I'm your man LOL maybe I could
advertise a cuppa tea or arf a pint of ale :-)

Anyway . good stuff Pippa ..you see, we're getting somewhere now. This is
exactly what I meant. I'm happy to go with the flow and let a.n.other decide
on the tunage, the strapline and the sweepers and stabs ......so that we get
the same sound we get the same Company to do the lot. Here's where the
tricky bit comes in .. well, it ain't tricky, the ones that want the
business then bid for it and we get a good price whacked out amonst all the
Stations.

So the imagers are the same, all the Company has to do is sing or speak the
Station name in the middle for each individual Station hey presto ...

It possibly wouldn't work for those Stations broadcasting in other languages
for obvious reasons as their sound can be completely different, but the
channels that Broadcast in 100% English would definitely get away with it.

The nearest Stations to us are Pure / Moorlands / Cheshire / BearTown / Cat
etc trouble is, if it ends up mish mash then it's pointless. It's kind of
an all or nothing.

However, as Pippa suggests I suppose there is a half way house where we all
have the same couple of sweepers that slot in from time to time ...

Community Radio for the UK, Community Radio works, it's live' and it's local
.. this is Community Radio just a thought that's all

I think there is a great idea at the heart of this and perhaps we can find a
way to deliver it which works for everyone. How about we agree a common
strapline and then we get some imaging made up with a common beginning and
ending (the strapline) with space in the middle for each station to voice
over their own id. It might sound something like this:

"Live and local community radio ......... You're listening to Wycombe Sound
87.9FM ......... Community Radio Works"

It would give us all the opportunity to sing the same message but with a
local voice - which is what listeners want. We could get two or three
styles done so that each station can pick the one which most fits their
station sound. It wouldn't cost much to do.

Taking it further, how about something similar where we can insert
testimonials from happy advertisers.

And if anyone wants a posh Buckinghamshire accent then I'm yer girl Smile

Our nearest Station is about 10 miles away, the next one being over 15 miles
away . so technically we don't have any neighbours .. I think we get on with
everyone though ?? I have always tried to get on with my ex commercial
buddies, it is they who seem to have the problem with us, I certainly don't
have a problem with them.

We're all on our own here .....we've got a name change and new strapline
coming in the spring-time <><><><> ''Billy No Mates FM'' 102.8

We could get to something akin to this.

A modern RDS-equipped receiver interprets parts of your PI code to associate
you with other similar stations.

This will allow a receiver tuned to your station to switch automatically to
another CR station when its signal achieves a higher level than yours for a
preset amount of time on a journey.

This may or may not be something you would like to consider - depending on
how well you get on with your neighbours!

Dear All

I know it would never happen .. Well, I don't think it would, but wouldn't
it be absolutely fantastic if we ALL had the same imaging. Obviously the
wording in the sweepers / jingles / stabs etc would be different but the
sound / music / style the same. You could drive anywhere in the Country and
tune into the local Community Radio Station .. The most you here the ident
you automatically know it is Community Radio.

At the end of the day, we are a fraternity, we are a family ..... I'd be up
for it

Am I now off with the fairies heading for Noddyland or perhaps completely
gone doolally ? .... I am currently in a rocking chair sat on the front
patio with a sock on my head, two knitting needles in my ears and a piece of
straw hanging out of my mouth :-)

Can anyone suggest a good imaging production company they have used in the
past. I am aware of the 'usual suspects' so trying to find someone who is
innovative and different?
