The BBC has today (Monday 16th February) signed a new agreement with the
Community Media Association to pledge a closer working relationship. The
Memorandum of Understanding was signed on behalf of the *BBC by David
Holdsworth*, *Controller of BBC English Regions* and *Dom Chambers*, *Chair
of the Community Media Association.* It’s designed to help deliver on the
public service objectives of both organisations.
The renewed relationship will be highlighted next week when the BBC and CMA
will showcase their first national project; the BBC/Community Media
Reporters’ Day.
13 Local BBC Radio Stations, including; *BBC WM*, *BBC Radio Devon* and *BBC
London *are taking part in the pilot and will work alongside their local
members of the *Community Media Association*. Over the last few months they
have been sharing skills through a series of workshops. On February 23rd
they’ll be broadcasting their stories across the English regions network.
It is hoped that through this mentoring scheme both organisations will
share content, skills, training and expertise – while finding new voices
and radio talent.
*David Holdsworth, Controller of BBC English Regions*, said: “This is a
productive partnership between BBC Local Radio and the Community Media
Association. We can share resources and in the process help develop the
next generation of new talent. I am delighted to be signing the MOU today.”
*Dom Chambers, Chair of the Community Media Association*, said: “In the
fast changing landscape of local media it makes sense for the BBC and
community media to form a closer working partnership. The value to each
other as complementing resources is immeasurable. The CMA and its members
are committed to facilitating access to the media by individuals and
communities as a vehicle to drive positive social change.
We are encouraged by what our MOU has achieved locally with the development
of some strong co-working. The launching of the first national project
between the CMA and the BBC in November 2014 marks a new phase of
cooperation.
This MOU has been designed to build on that. I am pleased that it comes
with a commitment for both organisations to meet and monitor as well as
drive forward its progress. The cooperation this triggers will help us all
deliver media that maximises positive impact on individuals and audiences.”
The 13 BBC Local Radio Stations taking part in the pilot are; BBC Radio
Lincolnshire, BBC Radio Leeds, BBC Radio Humberside, BBC Radio Sheffield,
BBC Radio Manchester, BBC WM, BBC Radio Leicester, BBC Radio Norfolk, BBC
Radio London, BBC Radio Solent, BBC Radio Bristol, BBC Radio Devon and BBC
Radio Cornwall.
