‘Success‘ of course depends how it’s defined.    

 

If you would like some rules;

 

Rule 1: Radio works similarly wherever you are.

 

Rule 2: Ignore rule 1 as you’ll never be the top station by doing what the
incumbent does.

 

Rule 3 When it all goes wrong (and it will) refer to rule 1.

 

As a side note we have a ”House Style” which covers everything a presenter
needs to know when on air. For Let’s Talk Business there is an “Editorial
Policy” which outlines how subjects are treated as well as topics we do and
don’t cover.

 

As a minumum I’d recommend all stations have a written house style, (even if
they are doing OK without one) the presenters, station managers, listeners
and advertisers will all benefit.

While there are corners of the radio universe where the sun rises in the
west and sets in the east, for most standard rules apply. Like anything
though, understanding how the basics work allows one to find alternatives.
This apply to gaining listeners and giving advertises a return on their
investment, so I’m sure you are right.

Unfortunately Alan I don't have access to every survey asking why people
listen to the radio.

What I do have is specific feedback from the 40-odd Community Radio stations
we have facilitated over the last 10 years and the general feeling -
illustrated by the very small number that use a bought-in News service such
as SNR - is that their listeners prefer to have proper relevant local news
written and read by people who know the area.

They're not really interested in getting a tiny token dose of National and
International News - read by what often sounds like a Estuary
work-experience student - from their Community station.
That's hardly keeping in touch.
And I suggest that advertisers at CR level - and again we've lots of
experience in that field as well - don't follow those cunning marketing
theories - they just  ask for good quality exposure when the right tranche
of audience is present.

Every survey asking why people listen to the radio has the same top answer -
for the news. So as you say, the reason stations broadcast news is to
prevent people switching over. 

 

While I’m all in favour of breaking away from the norms, not having national
news and just concentrating on local stuff or not having any news makes a
station sound small and out of touch.

 

There are revenue benefit too. A programmers job is to get listeners to the
end of the next ad break for which a tried and tested method is to run
commercials just before the biggest news stories. This make advertisers
happy.

 

Covering news is expensive as the top stories are most often national or
international. This means it’s impractical for almost all stations (even
commercial) to fund. 

 

On balance it’s better to have national news than not and to use a service
like SNR.

I can't see the need for CR stations to carry SNR or any other
national/international news on the hour any more - even for using it as a
convenient hour closer.

The reason usually offered is that people will tune away if there's no news.

My counter to that would be that the CR audience neither wants nor needs
news regularly.

It can get it - if and when it needs it - all too easily from papers or TV.
It used to be a sign of professionalism if you were running a trial for a
commercial service.

But with the low quality of most syndicated news presentation now, I suggest
that you're much better off without it.
