[cma-l] World Press Freedom Day, 3rd May

World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in
December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference.
Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of
Windhoek<http://www.un.org/en/events/pressfreedomday/windhoek.shtml>is
celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day. It is an opportunity
to:

   - celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom;
   - assess the state of press freedom throughout the world;
   - defend the media from attacks on their independence;
   - pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of
   duty.

The focus this year is on three inter-related themes: the media’s
importance in development<http://www.unesco.org/new/en/unesco/events/prizes-and-celebrations/celebrations/international-days/world-press-freedom-day/2014-themes/free-media-contribute-to-good-governance-empowerment-and-eradicating-poverty/>;
the safety of journalists and the rule of
law<http://www.unesco.org/new/en/unesco/events/prizes-and-celebrations/celebrations/international-days/world-press-freedom-day/2014-themes/rule-of-law-to-ensure-safety-of-journalists-and-combating-impunity/>;
and the sustainability and integrity of
journalism<http://www.unesco.org/new/en/unesco/events/prizes-and-celebrations/celebrations/international-days/world-press-freedom-day/2014-themes/sustainability-and-professionalism-of-journalism-is-part-of-development/>.
An international conference will be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on
5-6 May.

The annual UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize
ceremony<http://www.unesco.org/new/en/communication-and-information/freedom-of-expression/press-freedom/unesco-world-press-freedom-prize/>took
place on 2 May 2014 at UNESCO Headquarters.
