Community Filmmaking and Cultural Diversity: Practice, Innovation and Policy
Event Date: 22/01/2014
Event Location: BFI Southbank, London
The conference is organised as part of an AHRC funded research project
investigating community filmmaking in the UK with particular emphasis on
its connection with cultural diversity. The research project (running
from February 2012 till January 2013) aims to contribute to the debate
around community filmmaking and cultural diversity by exploring how
cultural diversity intersects with community filmmaking and the results
of this intersection in terms of representations and identities as well
as practices and innovation. The project will outline, through a
complexity perspective, a broader framework that considers the
intersection between community film making and cultural diversity
through the five following dimensions: representation and identity, the
role of film as media, the tensions in filming practices between arts
and commerce, existing knowledge and innovation dynamics and the roles
of intermediaries, policy and place. We aim to map the nature of the
networks in which community filmmakers are embedded and the role of
local and national institutional settings, policy and place.
Call for contributions
The conference will be the conclusion of the one-year AHRC funded
Connected Communities research project and we will present some of the
outcomes of our research. We welcome this opportunity to invite other
experts and practitioners in this field to contribute.
As part of the final conference of this project, we are seeking papers
and presentations exploring the relationship between community
filmmaking, cultural diversity and innovation. The call is open to
academics, film-makers and policy makers.

Amateur film, community film and filmmaking
Cultural identity, diversity and filmmaking
Community filmmaking as social expression
