CMFE Board member Pieter de Wit spoke on Wednesday at the Meeting of the
Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media of the Parliamentary
Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) held in Belgrade at the Serbian
National Assembly on the eve of the Council of Europe Conference of
Ministers responsible for Media and Information Society.

His presentation on community media was part of the session on “Priorities
for Audiovisual Media Policy in Europe”, and served to reinforce the
importance of the third media sector for promoting pluralism, diversity,
and democracy in Europe.

Pieter stressed that "the community media sector is under resourced when it
comes to adequate regulation, financial means and distribution channels. In
these areas we need support from national governments: please use the CoE
declaration and EP resolution in reviewing broadcasting legislation.
We also need European institutions to build further on their important
texts: new initiatives are needed, a progress report with an evaluation of
countries on community media policy, examples of best practices. Also
community media should be included in new media policy development in areas
as media pluralism and digitalization policy."

In their conclusions, the Committee on Culture and Media of the Serbian
National Assembly and the PACE Sub-Committee on Media and Information
Society:

"supported the independence and financial sustainability of public service
broadcasting as well as community media as essential elements of the media
landscape in a democratic society."
