Superb news in many ways but a tad disappointing that ' Tom was one of only two nominees on the list who work within the still emerging community radio sector'. Given the talent in our field we really should be owning this award!

PRESS RELEASE
20 October 2011

LONDON COMMUNITY RADIO MANAGER HONOURED BY RADIO ACADEMY

Tom Besley, assistant manager at London community radio station
Resonance104.4fm, was today honoured by The Radio Academy as one of
their “30 under 30.” The list of high achievers, in its inaugural
year, identifies the “thirty young people who don’t just do their job
well, but go the extra mile” and recognises “the industry’s youngest
stars.”

Facing competition from across the UK, with over 200 entries by
under-30s, an independent panel chaired by Paul Robinson recognised
people in a variety of roles within today's radio industry, including
production and management, technical environment, sales and marketing.
Tom was one of only two nominees on the list who work within the still
emerging community radio sector.

As assistant manager of Resonance104.4fm (which this year won the
Academy's Nations and Regions Award for the second year running), Tom
started in radio as a volunteer at the age of 16. With its commitment
to the arts, new music and cultural reportage, Resonance 104.4fm has
proved the perfect environment for indulging his restless spirit and
honing his wide-ranging skills.

John Myers, Chief Executive of the Radio Academy, was enthusiastic
about the 30 under 30: “The Radio Academy would like to offer its
congratulations to all those who achieved the accolade of being in the
very first 30 under 30 and we very much look
forward to introducing them at the Radio Festival later this month.”
The Festival takes place in Manchester from 31 October to 2 November
this year and brings together all the major players in radio today.
Tom Besley will be among them.

Upon hearing the news of this accolade, Tom was over the moon. “I am
really happy to be recognised in this way,” he said, adding, “It
speaks volumes not only about my own role, but also about the
collective endeavour of everyone involved at Resonance104.4fm - and
the community radio ethos we strive to maintain.”

In addition to his work at Resonance104.4fm, polymath Tom has just
started a postgraduate degree in philosophy of the social sciences at
the London School of Economics. He's recently returned from a trip
across Mali and has just got his motorcycle licence. He's nipping up
on his bike to the Radio Academy Festival the day after doing the
backstage work at Resonance104.4fm's sold-out fund-raising comedy gala
on 1 November, “Resofit,” hosted by top stand-up and star supporter of
the station Stewart Lee.

Busy times for Tom – and busy times for community radio.
