[cma-l] DAB Broadcasting

Back in 2006/7 we approached the "local" DAB multiplex licence holder and were quoted a figure of several £10,000s for an annual provision of a 64bit rate mono service which would have covered an area hundreds of times larger than our CR footprint.

Five years later there is still no sign of this multiplex being built. It required nine separate transmitters, two of which are within our service area. I specifically asked the head of radio engineering at OFCOM if it would be possible for us to broadcast on just these two transmitters with other CR stations near to the remaining seven transmitters broadcasting in their area. I got an emphatic NO - it would not be possible.

After some challenging it became apparent that "not possible" did not mean technically but contractually - they couldn't force the operator to do anything like this (in fact they obviously can't force the operator actually to build the multiplex anyway).

This all added to my suspicion then - and conviction now - that DAB is completely and utterly useless for local, let alone Community services.
