[cma-l] Sony Radio Academy Awards 2011

You may be less surprised that BBC do so well if you knew that they spend £1
million on the application process, including - although they deny this -
employing consultants to work on their applications.

Ed, it really is a shame, I whole heartedly agree.
We, as a sector, have so much talent and potential
I feel we can easily compete with the BBC and Commercial stations.
Phil and I from BCfm were up at the nomination event on Wednesday, having
put
two applications in ourselves for BCfm - We had already won the Best South
West
for under 300,000 and so got a 'free' automatic entry to the Sony's but we
invested
our £120 for the other application and a few more hundred pounds in the
hours it took
us to put it all together because we were very proud of the audio, believed
in it and thought
it deserved a higher profile - local BBC had already featured it.

However I believe putting together these applications requires the
expertise, time and insider
knowledge and experience that, clearly, the BBC and commercial networks
have.

As the evening went on, and one BBC station after another (plus minimal
others) got nominated my heart did begin
to sink for us all, I really know how much it would mean to our volunteers
to be recognised in
this way. To be honest, it also got very boring and I felt like I had
gate-crashed someone
else's party!

If I recall, we had this debate on the forum last year about whether people
were going to put forward
applications for nominations and as a sector we were very divided in our
opinion (and long may that last)
Should we pay?
Should we have our own category?
Should we stick to our principles and forget these awards and spend time on
our volunteers and our community?

........or should we ask the BBC for some expertise and 'funding in kind' to

help us put together some potentially awarding winning
entries - what about that for Partnership working? Just a thought.

I am genuinely curious to know: has the community radio community in
general given up on the Sonys? or have the Sonys given up on community
radio? Or both?
