[cma-l] Jeremy Hunt MP confirmed as Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport

Dear Simon,
Thanks for your figures about the Sonys. It's always seemed incongruous that something which is a national service should spend so many working hours looking for recognition.

Regarding a combined day of broadcasts around community station closure, we can certainly invite other people to discuss the topic all day, while remaining impartial. I'd love to hear some guests on who were pro the selling off of FM on a panel!

Anyway, how long have we got before they intend to push this through?

An on air campaign is in breach of your licence to broadcast.
You need to check the broadcast codes and what is required.  Its says, roughly,
that a station does not campaign or have an opinion on public policy.

We should, off air, campaign for some top slicing from the BBC
and Central Office Of Information.  Before anyone tells me that the BBC is
skint its worth noting that they spent £46,000 on tickets to attend the Sony’s
and put in over 500 applications at £50,000 .... That excludes the staff time
preparing those applications and the contractors that they paid to prepare
them. Oh, and it doesn’t include the hospitality or accommodation costs
either.

Simon

Thanks for sharing that. It will only happen if we let it
  happen.

We have to help shape the world we live in, we can't just
  accept it.

I propose a day when community stations across
country broadcast a day of protest, we can centralise some jingles, and
theme a day around our impending threat and ask listeners to sign a
petition or write to their local MP. That kind of co-ordinated effort is most
definiately newsworthy and will give the issue the press it deserves.

Perhaps we cam volunteer Jaqui Devereux as
the main CMA spokeperson for national press, and distribute press
packs to particpiating station complete with facts on the issue so they can
  answer any local press enquiries.

  'Be afraid be very afraid...'

  From the  BBC news site

'  - Mr Hunt told Newsnight that if the cuts were distributed
equally, his department - including the Olympic budget, which is not
protected - would have to find £66m of savings.'

So it's tragically clear that we're whistling in the wind for more money to
the CR Fund, then again if we dont ask we dont get.

My main fear is that that regulatory boundaries that ensure community radio
is not just some ultra local form of commercial radio will get binned, along
with the single owner rule - and we'll be left with automated syndicated pop
pap stations where once we had a voice.  I'm not saying that all the
regulation is right but left with no checks and balances we can kiss good-bye
to the distinctive sector that we're so proud of.  Not being alarmist
  but...

  bests,

Can we put it forward that there shouldn't be digital
    switchover at all for radio.

Why should FM belong to businesses? Whose gain is it, behind the govt's
move, and how can it possibly be in people's interests?

If businesses buy up the airwaves and use it for data transmission, what
effect will it have in the country? Will there be a lot more data flying
through the air, stronger signals, more receivers...what?

This aside, it's ridiculous that you have to fight for community radio's
survival on FM. The only way they can get away with it, is if the
population is largely unaware until it's too late. In which case I would
suggest a huge, co-ordinated press stunt up and down the country by us all.

    Dear all

Our agenda will definitely include the following:

Making the case for an increase in the Community Radio Fund, through

(smallish) contributions from other government departments), on the

basis that every £1 spent on community radio saves the government at

least £2 from other spending sources

Making the case for the facilitation of community television on Freeview

Arguing that the best use of any underspend on the Digital Switchover

Help Scheme ( which is NOT topslicing the BBC as it does not fund any

of the BBC's programme making or other direct activities) would be to

commit a major part of that to the development of community media in

    the UK

Reminding the new government that it is a signatory to both the

European Parliament and the Council of Europe resolutions urging

governments to recognise the role of community media in civil society

    - through direct and indirect funding and support

Arguing to ensure that the growth of community media (radio, TV and

internet based projects) is recognised, valued and funded in

appropriate ways, through appropriate funding and spectrum allocation

policies (including power transmission issues for those of you

    fighting pirate radio)

Let us know if we have missed anything you would like us to put forward

    Best wishes

    Jaqui

    Director, Community Media Association
