MAKING GOOD SOCIETY

Final report of the

Commission of Inquiry into the Future of Civil Society in the UK and
Ireland

WCVA, Baltic House, Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, CF10 5FH

Monday 22 March 2010, 16.00-18.00

I am writing to invite you to attend the launch of the final report of
the independent Commission of Inquiry into the Future of Civil Society
in the UK and Ireland, supported by the Carnegie UK Trust, in Cardiff on
22 March 2010.

The Inquiry has involved hundreds of participants from all parts of
civil society, and the Commission itself is made up of leading figures
from the voluntary sector, faith, business, trade unions and politics,
including George Reid (Commission Vice-Chair), Anna Nicholl (Special
Adviser, Welsh Assembly Government), The Ven. Richard Atkinson (Bishop
of Leicester) and Joyce McMillan (Chief theatre critic of the Scotsman).

The final Commission report, Making Good Society, highlights the
critical importance of civil society activity (including voluntary and
community organisations, faith-based organisations, trades unions,
cooperatives and mutuals) in tackling some of the most pressing issues
of our time and advocates a radical expansion of civil society's role,
with detailed recommendations on finance and the economy; climate change
and resource scarcity; the media and reforming politics.

The launch of Making Good Society will bring together representatives
from across civil society and other sectors to hear firsthand about the
findings of the Commission report. Graham Benfield, Chief Executive of
the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA ) has kindly agreed to
support this event and we will also be joined by guest speakers
including Paul O'Shea of Unison. Importantly the event will be an
opportunity to discuss how to galvanise civil society and other sectors
to take forward the ideas in the Commission report, and put civil
society centre stage in the run up to and beyond the general election.

We hope very much that you or a colleague of yours will be able to join
us at the launch on 22 March. Please note that places at this event are
limited. To book a place please email Catherine Moloney at
makinggoodsociety at carnegieuk.org or call 0207 7856570.
