Anne McIntosh (Thirsk and Malton, Conservative):
:::
To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport
what plans he has for the future use of the analogue spectrum after
digital switchover.
Edward Vaizey (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Culture,
Communications and Creative Industries), Business, Innovation and
Skills; Wantage, Conservative):
:::
Around a quarter of all radio listening is now to digital, so a future
transition to digital radio continues to gain impetus. However, we
believe that FM analogue broadcasting will continue for the
foreseeable future and for at least as long as it is needed as a
platform for local radio.
It would not be in anyone's interest to force stations on to DAB or to
'switch off' FM at a time when it would leave local and community
stations without an appropriate broadcast platform. Radio broadcasting
on FM will therefore continue for as long as it is needed and viable.
