[cma-l] "Platform-Neutral" radio receivers

Totally admirable as that is, Jaqui, at present the power requirements of chipsets for DAB - let alone all the other additional platforms - makes truly portable battery receivers non-viable.

The more important aspect surely is:

Why this media-inspired headlong rush towards "Digital" (unspecified) when neither the desire nor the need nor the necessary technology are present?

Analogue FM broadcasting is in almost totally universal utilisation throughout the world.

There is no visible requirement to use the FM Band for anything else in the UK.

Therefore the UK has no need to relinquish FM broadcasting at all and in doing so would place itself outside the worldwide norm and into a void where few international receiver manufacturers would want to produce UK-only receivers.

Isn't the conclusion obvious?

Stick with DAB for the time being as it is for major broadcasters and do not even try to expand it until the UK can convert to least an EU-wide agreed alternative platform.

When that is in place, offer small broadcasters inclusion into Local multiplexes rather than the Regional structure we have at present but with the option of remaining on perfectly feasible Band II FM if they wish.
