Black History Month events begin this Sunday afternoon (October 4) with
hosts, two acknowledged experts in the field, the freelance
writer, DJ and broadcaster Marva Lord and Dominic Rai, artistic director
of the Man Mela British Asian theatre company.
Sunday, October 4th 3:00pm - 5:00pm. Free
Dominic and Marva will share with the audience in conversation
*Exploring Contemporary Cultural Experience* including slide shows and a
a presentation from a production Dominic directed, Across the
Black Waters, based on the classic war novel by Mulk Raj Anand. From
3:00pm – 5:00pm at The Globe @ Hay, Newport Street, Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5BG.
Admission is free courtesy of the Globe, BVSNW, and the Arts Council of
Wales.
Saturday, October 10th 3:00pm - 5:00pm. Free
Marva will be joined by percussionist Manu Song. Manu is a Jamaican /
British artist, musician, farmer
who is working under the umbrella of The Rainbow View Project. Over the
last 30 years Manu has been compiling a collections of songs which he
calls Songs for People n Planet. Manu and Marva will be discussing *The
Impact of Caribbean Culture on Contemporary Music* and workshop
participants will be invited to learn the rhythms with Manu. Taking
place from 3:00pm - 5:00pm at The Globe @ Hay, Newport Street,
Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5BG. Admission is free courtesy of the Globe, BVSNW, and
the Arts Council of Wales.
Saturday, October 10th 7:00pm. £5 at the door
Marva Lord presents *The Orange Colored Sky*, a program of song and
spoken word inspired by the spirit of Nat King Cole. Marva will perform
classics from traditions of blues, jazz, gospel and more, acapella and
with backing tracks. Marva returns to singing after many years as a club
and community radio DJ; and comes from a choral tradition singing in
church and secular choirs, including traditional song, barbershop,
doowop, and swing styles.
Readings will be from the writings of Langston Hughes, Zora Neale
Hurston and others. Followed by a screening of Menelik Shabazz'
pioneering film, *Burning An Illusion*, courtesy of the filmmaker.
Thank you to the Globe for making the venue available and to Menelik for
allowing us to screen the film. Menelik is currently working on a new
film documenting the history of Lover's Rock.
