PRESENTING YOURSELF AT AN INTERVIEW

Outline for workshop

It is assumed that participants, whether new entrants or more
experienced, will already have knowledge of how to get to the
interview stage, how to network, are familiar with self-marketing
concepts and have a decent CV. This outline aims to build upon this
knowledge.

The workshop will include:

PRE-INTERVIEW

Research

Building upon initial research done to gain the interview:
researching further on the prospective employer e.g. size, number of
employees, structure, history, production focus, current productions
etc.

    * Filing/storing this information.
    * Thinking about how to demonstrate you’ve done this research.

Preparation

    * Considering questions you may be asked, and preparing your replies
    * Considering what you want to say about yourself. What is your USP?

Does this match what the prospective employer wants and needs?

    * How to communicate this confidently and articulately.
    * Thinking about questions YOU want to ask.

Different types of interviews

    * Finding out what sort of interview to expect – is it a casual
meeting, informal, formal, or a “board”-style interview?
    * What will different types of interview mean for you? How do you
manage this? How do you prepare for this?

ATTENDING THE INTERVIEW

    * Practical points e.g. appearance, timing, entering and leaving the room
    * Points to consider during the interview e.g.
o Body language and eye contact
          o Making a good impression
          o Answering and asking questions
o Dealing with difficult questions e.g. gaps in your CV
o Talking about weaknesses as well as strengths
          o Leaving a copy of CV/portfolio/DVD
o How to appear keen, but not desperate
o Asking about pay – when is it appropriate?
          o Winding up/ending the interview

FOLLOWING UP THE INTERVIEW

    * Reviewing your performance.
    * Follow up the interview in a professional manner.
    * Being positive if the outcome is negative, and learning for the future.
