Salford's impressive team of 130 community radio volunteers are 
celebrating today as Salford City Radio received the prestigious 
Community Award at the Salford Business Awards.

This major award was presented by Felicity Goody in recognition of the 
excellent contribution that Salford City Radio makes to the community, 
from offering radio skills training courses to disaffected community 
members to providing hundreds of free adverts and promotions for all 
local community groups.

The Community Award is designed to reward businesses who make a 
committed and proactive contribution to the enhancement and benefit of 
the community in which they operate.  The judges look at how the 
organisation has worked effectively with community groups, their 
commitment to continue their work in the community in the future and how 
excellent management has maximised the benefits to the local community.

Held in conjunction with Salford City Council, The University of Salford 
and the Chapel Street Business Group the first annual Salford Business 
Awards took place in April 2008 creating a platform to promote the city, 
its businesses and their growing  successes.

Salford Business Awards will begin to provide the recognition that 
Salford's businesses deserve and will reflect the City's strong 
traditions and fascinating history of innovation and success.

The award ceremony took place at the Lowry Hotel on the 30th April. 
Station Manager Steve Suttie said "This is a major triumph for all of 
our team, and our growing army of loyal listeners. Community Radio is 
really beginning to attract the public's attention because of its fresh 
and alternative approach. Traditional local radio has slowly become 
quite predictable  and stagnated. Here in Salford, we have shown that 
volunteers are capable of putting together radio programmes that stand 
side by side professionally produced content - often producing better 
results".
