What is ESoDoc?
ESoDoc is a European workshop on the social documentary, that takes up
the challenge of putting together the various players involved in
documentary film production.
ESoDoc aims at creating new opportunities in production for the
European documentary market, where the focus is on human rights,
social justice and environmental protection, especially in developing
nations; at the same time, ESoDoc is a response to growing awareness,
on the part of NGOs and non-profit organizations, that film and new
media are strategic instruments for the promotion of their work.

ESoDoc provides a meeting point for audiovisual industry professionals
in search of new content and non-profit organizations that are seeking
out new ways to diffuse their message.

Workshop Structure:
Three week-long workshops held over a six-month period (usually May -
July - October).
Session 1: provides lectures, seminars and hands on experience. Main
themes are the camcorder revolution, links between broadcasters and
NGOs, NGO film work in the field, uses of the New Media and Cross
Media platforms. A special focus will be given to the viewing and
discussion of 'social action' documentaries from East and West. Both
group and individual projects will get under way this week.

Session 2: has a more practical approach with group and one to one
tuition. In addition there are guest lectures on new initiatives in
social action documentary and speakers from the developing world give
their perspective. These lectures are related to the projects being
developed by participants.

Session 3: climaxes with a pitching session – participants pitch their
projects to commissioning editors from TV, NGOs, community channels
and other sector professionals. Before that the emphasis is on
production; finding the money, budgeting, legal requirements,
distribution and a knowledge of the audio visual market.
