Time is running out for UK-based not-for-profit organisations to enter
a global competition that offers a $1 million first prize.

Aimed at rewarding groups who have made a significant contribution to
advancing economic, social and environmental sustainability,
applications to this year's Alcan Prize for Sustainability must be
made by 12 September.

The contest is open to any not-for-profit, civil society or
non-governmental organisation. There are no restrictions on size,
focus or location, although applicants are required to have been
operating for a minimum of five years.

Previous winners cannot re-enter the competition for a minimum of three years.

To stand a chance of scooping the $1 million first prize, entrants
will be expected to demonstrate:

    * A measurable impact on sustainability.
    * Innovation.
    * Partnership.
    * How the project can be replicated.
    * A strong track-record.
    * Scalability.
    * Methods to balance the economic, environmental, and social
impact of the project.
    * How the project will be sustainable after funding has finished.

Interested organisations are asked to register online in order to gain
access to application forms and guidance documents.

Entries will be assessed in November and December, with a shortlist of
10 applicants revealed in February 2009. These finalists will then
undergo further assessments in March and April, with the overall
winner announced in June 2009.

As well as the first prize of $1 million, the nine other finalists
will each receive a $15,000 grant to invest in training and capacity
building.
