A handout like that would be really useful.

I attended a session of the Government Third Sector Review in September
2006. The people from the Treasury who were running the meeting knew
nothing about community radio, but by the end of the meeting, they went back
to London with copious notes and a full knowledge of what community radio is
and could be. The three MPs on my patch certainly know about community
radio. Every station should be in contact with the local MP/s and should
make sure that the MP and local councillors understand what community radio
is and what it can achieve. Keep the MPs and councillors in the picture
with what you are doing and planning. This will result in community radio
permeating local and national Government consciousness. Once MPs and
councillors appreciate what is going on in their own patch, they will
publicise it.

Perhaps CMA could produce a handout for use by community stations, stating
simply but effectively the role and aims of community radio. This could be
forwarded by stations to MPs, councillors and anyone else, who can promote
community radio.

Michael Fryer

Community Media was included in the Third Sector Interim Report but there
has not been anything approaching an effective UK lobby.

Perhaps we should all be thinking about how best this could be achieved.

One great failing in the organisation of community radio has been that,
although the Government built into the granting of licences that social gain
was an essential element, it failed to fully inform other Government
departments. Community radio should be regarded on a par with other
community groups, which are there to improve areas of deprivation e.g.
social problems, discrimination, disablement, lack of employment and/or
education etc. and should be working alongside the relevant agencies. At a
stroke this would remove one of the main barriers to funding and
co-operation within community radio, i.e. the widespread idea that it is
just a group of people playing music and therefore not to be taken
seriously. National and local government should ensure that community radio
is included alongside other departments as one of the tools for
disseminating information and attaining improvement targets in the afore
mentioned areas.

The more community radio stations work together, the stronger will be the
message to Government.
