Hello,

I thought I'd introduce myself, after lurking on this list for quite a
while!

I'm a doctoral student at the Centre for Broadcasting History Research,
Bournemouth University, and I'm researching 'Oral History, Community &
Vernacular Radio'. In other words, I'm looking at the use of oral
history on radio to document/address communities, and the resulting
implications of the inclusion of vernacular speech 'on air'.

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions on this topic, if it brings
anything to mind.

As well as latter-day oral history projects on community radio (please
send examples if you're familiar with any!), I'm hoping to discover more
about the use of the tape recorder in the BBC regions in the post-war
period. On the latter topic, Charles Parker is obviously vital, but also
is anyone familiar with the following..?

Denis Mitchell's work in the BBC North Region (use of tape recorder for
'People Talking' series 1955-8)
Playwright/producer Sam Hanna Bell's extensive work in BBC Northern
Ireland (broadcasting of folklore collected with Michael J. Murphy)
David Thomson's collaborations (on Third programme?) with oral historian
George Ewart Evans.

Thanks very much in advance!

Ieuan Franklin.
